Background Information

The Man of Kent Cricket Club was established in 1999 by a small group of regulars at the Man of Kent Tavern and Cafe in Hoosick, NY. These local cricket enthusiasts, among them several English expats and a few American newcomers to the sport, were encouraged by Man of Kent owner John Stoate to form an active club, and so MOKCC was born.

The club practiced and played from late May through mid-October, using a well-maintained turf pitch on the athletic field of a local private school: a gracious voluntary arrangement that provides an idyllic open setting with inspiring views of the nearby hills. We also had a net at the Man of Kent Tavern and Cafe which was used for evening practices.

With regard to inter-club play, MOKCC maintained an especially fruitful relationship with the Tri-City Cricket Club, based in Schenectady, NY, an established team that draws many of its members from the Capital District's large Guyanese community. We remain indebted to Tri-City CC for the opportunity to play and learn alongside such a friendly squad of exceptional cricketers.

In 2002, MOKCC established a set of by-laws designed to uphold the spirit of cricket and facilitate planning and development for the club. Elected "officers" include manager, secretary treasurer, captain and vice-captain. The club holds an annual general meeting each spring to plan the upcoming season. There is also an annual awards dinner (featuring potluck dishes from cricket's Test Match countries) in late winter to recognize individual members' achievements in various categories during the previous season and to elect new officers (both by vote of the entire club membership).

The club's spiritual home and unofficial clubhouse throughout the year was the Man of Kent Tavern and Cafe, where players typically retired after practices and games during the cricket season for a pint or two and a bite to eat.
